Best Walking Routes in Northumberland National Park

Northumberland National Park’s wild moors, rugged peaks and dramatic coastline offer hundreds of routes for every type of walker and hiker.

With challenging hillwalks in the Cheviot Hills, plus long-distance trails and wildlife walks along the rugged Northumberland coast, Northumberland is a landscape packed with history and adventure.

From the violent battles that once raged along the Anglo-Scottish border to castles that were raided by Viking invaders, there are plenty of historical landmarks to discover on foot. There are also miles of walking routes and cycling trails through Kielder Forest and around Kielder Water – the largest artificial lake in the UK – plus millions of seabirds to watch on the islands and cliffs of England’s north-east coast.

Northumberland National Park also contains sections of the Pennine Way and the Hadrian’s Wall Path – two of England’s oldest, most iconic and busiest long-distance National Trails.
