Best Walking Routes near Newcastle

Newcastle is a wonderful and varied place to walk with its vibrant city streets and stunning quayside, plus coastline, moors and beautiful countryside on its doorstep.

Despite being the most populated city in the North East of England, Newcastle is surrounded on all sides by perfect landscapes for walking and hiking. From the moody hills of the North Pennines and the remote drama of the North York Moors to the seabirds and castles on the rugged Northumberland coast, this is a landscape crying out to be explored on foot.

Kielder Forest Park is just a short drive away – home to ospreys and the largest artificial lake in England – and north of the border the rolling hills of Scotland’s Southern Uplands are full of walking routes offering splendid scenery and solitude. If it’s wildlife walks you want, head for the coast where some of Britain’s busiest seabird colonies can be found.
