Best Walking Routes near Birmingham

Birmingham is England’s second largest city and thanks to its central location is surrounded on all sides by some of the best walking routes in the country.

With nearly 600 public parks and officially more trees than Paris, Birmingham city centre is a great place to explore on foot with lakes, canals, woodlands, valleys, hills and nature reserves all within easy reach.

Away from the city, there are endless routes and trails for walkers and hikers. The Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty lies to the west, with the rocky peaks of Snowdonia National Park beyond. To the south are the Malvern Hills and the picture-perfect towns and rolling hills of the Cotswolds. The shapely summits of the Brecon Beacons in South Wales are within driving distance, as are the high moors and limestone valleys of the Peak District National Park to the north.

So if you’re looking for urban trails or want to escape the city in search of green space, Birmingham is a great place to base yourself.
