Best Walking Routes near Glasgow

There are few cities in the world better located for walking and hiking than Glasgow, with the Southern Highlands and the legendary mountains of Scotland on its doorstep.

Glasgow is Scotland’s largest city so not an obvious target for people who love being outdoors, but its history, heritage and architecture make it a fascinating place to explore on foot. The mighty River Clyde runs right through the city too, offering some great riverside walking.

To the south are the remote Southern Uplands, home to some of Britain’s most secluded and enjoyable hillwalks. While to the north are the mighty peaks of the Scottish Highlands, with the beautiful freshwater expanse of Loch Lomond just a short drive from the city.

Ben Lomond, Ben A’an and The Cobbler are all popular mountains with stunning viewpoints that are easy to reach from Glasgow; while Ben Nevis – Britain’s highest mountain – lurks a couple of hours further north. If you enjoy challenging mountain hikes, Glasgow is the perfect city for you.
