Best Walking Routes in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland is one of the best places to walk and hike in the British Isles, with a landscape full of emerald-green mountains, glacial valleys, castles, ancient monuments and wild coastline.
Northern Ireland’s most challenging hikes can be found in the Mourne Mountains, which rise above the Irish Sea in the west of the country. Slieve Donard is the highest peak in Northern Ireland at 850 metres and is popular with hillwalkers from all over Europe, while the Mourne Wall and the Silent Valley are great places to walk too.

The spectacular basalt columns of the Giant’s Causeway, formed from the remains of ancient volcanic activity, can be explored on foot in County Antrim on Northern Ireland’s north coast; while nearby Rathlin Island is home to hundreds of thousands of seabirds including guillemots, kittiwakes, puffins and razorbills.

Other great hiking and walking trails in Northern Ireland include the Glenariff Waterfalls and the Sperrin Mountains on the border of counties Tyrone and Derry, spanning 40 miles of wild, untouched and dramatic scenery. Northern Ireland’s landscape is also famous for providing many filming locations for hit TV show Game of Thrones, with walking tours available to many of the most iconic scenes from the show.
