Description

Hot; quite windy at times. Stagecoach running 274 and 795 now. Fares were £1.20 and £0.65 (singles). Extensive roadworks on Ashopton Viaduct (since March 1998). Reservoirs very full. Lots of Canada Geese around Westend on water and grazing by roadside. Top of Linch Clough very wet below hump going left. Had to detour right then back left. Took right fork at next grough meet, but very rough going to get to the main track before Round Hill. Met no-one until Bleaklow Stones. Compass used Bleaklow Stones - Bleaklow Head but ended up too far right and hit the summit cairn first. Probably because aimed for a noticeable cut in the skyline beyond Bleaklow Hill. Large stretches of upper Hern Clough are now paved! As is most of the route from Alport Castles to the Open Country sign towards Lockerbrook. Tried to climb to top of Glethering Clough early to avoid steep climb, but may have hit Miry Clough instead. Found the Trig Point OK, but without compass and the route was serial groughs and wet grass.
