Day 11. Wednesday 6th November 2013. Bagan sightseeing by bike. Bagan rose to prominence during the 11th to 13th centuries. At its height it presented a sea of colour and spectacle, with over 13,000 temples and pagodas spread across its expansive plains. Today just over 2,000 remain, looking slightly reminiscent of Angkor Wat, Cambodia, albeit from a different religious culture. On Wednesday we arose at 4.30 to watch sunrise over Bagan from a terrace of the 12th Century Dhammayazika Temple. After returning to Floral Breeze for breakfast, we cycled around Bagan most of the day, but cycled only 15 miles, mostly offroad, spending most time on foot visiting, villages, temples, a sand-painting factory, Shwezigon Pagoda, Ananda Pagodas and 13th century Wetkyi-in-Gubyaukgyi cave temple. In one of the villages were made very welcome by a 90 year old lady. We also watched sunset over Bagan from the terrace of a temple nearby to Dhammayazika.
